Sadly, poisoning from lead sinkers and tackle are the biggest killers of Loons by far. It only takes one piece of lead the size of a grain of rice to kill an adult eagle or loon. Within days or weeks they become disoriented, weak, unable eat or look after themselves and their young and then die a slow death.
So OLRA is launching an initiative to “Get the Lead Out” of our tackle boxes.
If you drop off lead tackle to OLRA this summer you can receive a $10 coupon redeemable at the Parry Sound Canadian Tire for non-lead tackle. AND you can enter your name to win one of 4 “looney” prizes (see below). The draw will be made at the OLRA Family BBQ on Aug. 8th, 2026 at the Foley Community Centre.
Lead drop off opportunities : at the Otter Lake Marina, the Otter Lake Golf Tournament on July 25th, the Otter Lake Book Club ( two in person meetings are tbd) and at the OLRA Family BBQ on August 8th.
As well, please sign a petition too at the above locations that will go to the Ontario Government asking for sales of small lead tackle (the size that Loons can swallow) to be banned in Ontario.
