Rare Sighting of a Trumpeter Swan on Long Arm

May 30, 2019 by Kerry Mueller

Today Doug Link took this photo of this Trumpeter Swan hanging out on Long Arm on it migratory path. Thanks for sharing Doug!

These magnificent swans are the largest birds in North America. Over roughly 200 years their populations were decimated in eastern Canada, mostly due to over hunting. However, a conservation program was started by biologist Harry Lumsden with just a few eggs in the 1980’s and so these swans were reintroduced to Ontario. Trumpeter Swans can be seen at the Wye Marsh all year round. Check out their website for great photos and more info.

If you spot a Trumpeter Swan you can help track their progress by reporting it here.
